מחקרים הראו כי שימוש בקונדום במגע המיני הראשון מנבא שימוש חוזר בקונדום במגעים מיניים אחרים. בהתבסס על מחקרים אלו, השערת המחקר הנוכחי היא שמתבגרים שהשתמשו בקונדום מוקדם יותר בחייהם המיניים יטו להרגלים מיניים פחות מסכנים מאשר בני גילם שהחלו להשתמש בקונדום מאוחר יותר.
במחקר השתתפו 4018 צעירים, בגילאי 18-26. נמצא כי השערת המחקר אוששה: צעירים שהשתמשו בקונדום במגע המיני הראשון שלהם, המשיכו להשתמש בקונדום בחייהם המיניים יותר מאשר אלו שלא השתמשו בקונדום במגע המיני הראשון שלהם. ניתן לטעון כי אלו שהשתמשו בקונדום המגע המיני הראשון שלהם מראש נוטים לקחת פחות סיכונים, ועל כן דבר זה בא לידי ביטוי גם בתחום המיני. ואולם, המחקר מספק עוד שני טיעונים כדי להוכיח שטענה זו אינה נכונה.
